Suspension is the one system on a Honda Ridgeline that goes bad so slowly you never notice it happening. Nothing breaks, no light comes on — the truck just gradually stops feeling composed. Then you drive a newer one and realize how far yours has drifted. This guide covers what actually wears out on a Ridgeline, how to tell which part is at fault, and what to buy to fix it. What’s actually under your truck
The Ridgeline is a unibody truck with fully independent suspension at both ends — MacPherson struts up front and an independent rear, not the solid axle and leaf springs under a body-on-frame half-ton. That single fact drives everything else on this page:
- It’s a car job, not a truck job. A Ridgeline suspension refresh looks much more like refreshing a Pilot or an Odyssey than like re-springing an F-150. The parts, the tools, and the labor all follow the unibody playbook.
- There are more wear items. Independent suspension at both corners means more control arms, more bushings, and more ball joints than a leaf-sprung truck — more things that can wear, but also more places where a cheap part restores the ride.
- Geometry matters more. Alignment angles are affected by most of what you’ll touch. Plan on a four-wheel alignment as part of the job, not as an optional extra.
- Ride quality is the product. People buy this truck because it drives like a comfortable crossover. A worn suspension takes away the exact thing you paid for — which is why a refresh is one of the most satisfying jobs you can do to an older Ridgeline.
Symptoms → likely culprit
Dampers don’t fail on a schedule, so diagnose by symptom rather than by mileage:

Two rules keep the diagnosis honest. First, a leaking damper is a decision already made — oil on the outside means the seal is gone. Second, before you order bushings, get the truck safely on stands (see the jack points guide — the pinch-weld rules matter here) and physically check each joint for play. Pry gently at the control arm and grab the sway bar links; slop you can feel is slop you can fix.
The parts, in the order they usually matter
Sway bar end links and bushings — the cheap fix first
If your only complaint is a clunk or rattle over small bumps, start here. End links are the most common source of that noise on this platform, they’re inexpensive, and they’re one of the quicker jobs under the truck. Sway bar bushings — the rubber saddles clamping the bar to the body — dry out and squeak or knock as they age. Both parts are cheap enough that doing them together, in pairs, is the obvious move. Don’t spend money on struts until you’ve ruled these out.
Front struts — loaded assemblies, not bare struts
The front is a MacPherson strut: the damper is a structural part of the suspension, with the coil spring wrapped around it and an upper mount and bearing at the top that the whole thing steers on. That design gives you a real decision to make:
- A bare strut is cheaper, but it has to be transferred onto your existing spring with a spring compressor — a tool that stores a genuinely dangerous amount of energy and has hurt people. You’d also be reusing the old upper mount, bearing, dust boot, and bump stop on a truck old enough to need struts in the first place.
- A complete loaded assembly (often sold as a “quick strut”) ships pre-assembled with a new spring, mount, bearing, boot, and bump stop. It bolts in with no spring compression at all.
For nearly every DIY Ridgeline owner, the loaded assembly is the right buy. It costs more per corner but replaces every worn item in the tower at once and removes the most dangerous step from the job. If you’re paying a shop, ask which route they’re quoting — the labor difference is real.
Rear dampers
The rear is independent as well, so the rear job is more like a car’s than a leaf-sprung truck’s. Before you order, pull up a parts diagram for your exact model year and check whether your rear uses a combined coil-over unit or a separate spring and shock — that’s what decides whether you’re buying an assembly or an individual damper. Either way, replace both sides together.
Control arms, bushings, and ball joints
Control-arm bushings are what turn a tight truck into a vague one. As the rubber cracks and softens, the arm moves under load, alignment wanders, steering feel goes fuzzy, and tire wear picks up. On many arms the bushings and ball joint aren’t separately serviceable — or pressing new bushings into an old arm costs more in shop time than the part saves — which is why a complete control arm is often the practical replacement even when only the bushing failed. Check whether your arm’s ball joint is a separate part before you order.
Springs
Coil springs outlast dampers by a wide margin and don’t usually need replacing on their own. Look at them when one corner sits visibly low, when the truck has carried heavy loads for years, or when you find a crack or a broken coil. If you’re buying loaded front strut assemblies, new front springs come along for the ride.
OE-replacement, firmer, or coilover?
Three honest tiers, and the right answer for most people is the first one:
- OE-replacement dampers. The goal is “new truck again.” A quality OE-spec damper gives you back the ride Honda engineered, and for the overwhelming majority of owners that’s the whole point of the job.
- Firmer touring or towing-oriented dampers. A modestly firmer valving keeps the body flatter when the bed is loaded or a trailer is hooked up, at the cost of a little ride comfort unladen. - Coilovers. Ride-height and (on some kits) damping adjustability, a firmer feel, and a setup process. It’s a niche choice on a comfort-focused unibody truck, and it trades away the ride quality that makes the Ridgeline a Ridgeline. One more reality check: dampers don’t fix a sag problem, and springs don’t fix a bounce problem. If the truck squats under a loaded bed, that’s a spring-rate or helper-spring question, not a shock question. Buy for the symptom you actually have.
Doing the job right
A handful of details separate a refresh that lasts from one that comes back:
- Work in pairs, per axle. Never mix a new damper with a worn one on the same axle.

- Support the suspension, not just the body. With the wheel off, the arms hang at full droop. Know where the assembly will swing before you loosen the last bolt.
- Torque bushing bolts at ride height. Snug them under the truck, then lower it onto its wheels and final-torque. Clamping a rubber bushing at full droop preloads it in a twisted position and it will tear itself apart.
- Expect rust-seized hardware on a northern truck. Penetrating oil the day before, and have a plan for the bolt that doesn’t want to come out.
- Torque everything to the factory spec in your service manual — suspension fasteners are not “tight is tight.”
